This slide shows what can happen to a painted moon dial where very bad repainting is done on moon faces: crude in the extreme.

Unmarked spare moon dial, silvered edge. Reasonable but damaged. Moon dial faces: rather crude, brush strokes visible. Moon scenes: mountain with cattle, lakeside with cattle and tree.

Complicated clock, belonged to Ernest L Edwards, given to Merseyside Museum. Slide 281 shows dirty varnish on moon, 283 fully cleaned. Very fine professionally done painting. Moon has tiny mouth, vigorously painted waterfall on one side with leaning pine trees, street scene on other side.

This dial had had the centre mistakenly painted in acrylic, because the original oil painting was lost. Dial plate could have been soaked in chemicals, nothing left of it, so new scene had to be made up following the style of the moon.
